Mock Trial Date

The 2009 Tennessee State High School Mock Trial Competition will be held in Nashville on March 13-14 at the historic Davidson County Courthouse. The Doubletree Hotel will again serve as competition headquarters.

The following potential date conflicts have been identified. Teams are encouraged to take this information under advisement when preparing to compete.

SAT Dates -- Faculty advisors and coaches should be aware that the state mock trial competition date conflicts with the March SAT test, and are asked to advise their students to register for alternative test dates. The Mock Trial Committee was aware of the conflict before choosing the weekend of March 13-14, but did so as it was the only weekend the hotel was available. The committee regrets any inconvenience this causes for competitors.

YMCA Youth Legislature -- For schools with YMCA Youth Legislature teams competing in 2009, the state mock trial dates also conflict with Conference A. The YMCA Center for Civic Engagement and the TBA have worked together to reach a solution that will allow teams to participate in both activities. Youth Legislature teams currently scheduled to compete in Conference A may transfer to Conference B and compete later in the month on March 25-29. Teams wishing to make this change must contact Susan Moriarty at (615) 255-9622 x72317 or Erin O'Neal at eoneal@ymcamidtn.org no later than Jan. 15, 2009, to request the change.

Scoresheet Revisions
The TBA YLD Mock Trial Committee revised the official score sheet in 2006 to make it more user-friendly. The new version also does away with the overall team performance category, as this was the subject of much confusion in prior years when scorers used the box to subtotal scores instead of awarding a separate score. With this change, the revised score sheet has a maximum of 110 points, as opposed to 120 points in prior years. District coordinators are free to use this score sheet during local competitions; however, it is not necessary to do so. Download the scoresheet

National Competition
Tennessee’s 2009 state mock trial champion will be eligible to participate in the National High School Mock Trial Championship, which will be held May 6-10, 2009 in Atlanta. The event site is now live. Tournament registration information will be available Jan. 15 and the case will be released March 31 at 5 p.m. If you are planning ahead, mark your calendar for the 2010 national tournament, which will be held May 5-9 in Philadelphia.
