TBA YLD Election Guidelines

Election of Officers


President

Length of Term:
1 year

Election Procedures: The President-Elect ascends automatically to the position of President
at the completion of the term.


President-Elect

Length of Term: 1 year

Election Procedures: The Vice President ascends automatically to the position of President-Elect at the completion of the term.


Vice President

Length of Term:
1 year

Qualifications: Candidates must be under age 36 or practicing five years or less at the time they would assume office. Position rotates among the three grand divisions. To stand for election in 2008, candidates must reside in the Eastern Grand Division.

Filing Requirements: Candidates must file with the TBA YLD Secretary a nominating petition that includes the name of the candidate, the position sought and the candidate’s signature no later than April 1 of the year in which the election is held. A standard petition form is available from the YLD Director.

Election Procedures: Candidates unopposed for a position are deemed to have been elected on April 1. Contested elections will be decided by secret ballot at the division’s annual meeting in June. A successful candidate must receive a plurality (the greatest number) of votes. In the event of a tie vote of the membership, the YLD Board elects one of the candidates. In the event of a tie vote of the board, the YLD president breaks the tie.


East Tennessee Governor

Length of Term: 1 year

Qualifications: Candidates must maintain residency in the Eastern Grand Division and be under age 36 or practicing five years or less at the time they would assume office.

Filing Requirements: Candidates must file with the TBA YLD Secretary a nominating petition that includes the name of the candidate, the position sought and the candidate’s signature no later than April 1 of the year in which the election is held. A standard petition form is available from the YLD Director.

they would assume office.

Election of District Representatives

Length of Term: 2 years

Qualifications: Candidates must reside or maintain a principal office in the district for which they run and be under age 36 or practicing five years or less at the time they would assume office.

Filing Requirements: Candidates must file with the TBA YLD Secretary a nominating petition that includes the name of the candidate, the position sought and the candidate’s signature no later than April 1 of the year in which the election is held. A standard petition form is available from the YLD Director.

Election Procedures: Odd numbered districts are elected in odd numbered years and even numbered districts are elected in even numbered years. Candidates unopposed for a position are deemed to have been elected on April 1. Contested elections will be decided by secret ballot at the division’s annual meeting in June. A successful candidate must receive a plurality (the greatest number) of votes. In the event of a tie vote of the membership, the YLD Board elects one of the candidates. In the event of a tie vote of the board, the YLD president breaks the tie.


Election of Representatives to Other Organizations



Young Lawyer Delegates to the Tennessee Bar Association House of Delegates

Positions:
East Tennessee Young Lawyer Delegate
Middle Tennessee Young Lawyer Delegate
West Tennessee Young Lawyer Delegate

Length of Term: 2 years

Qualifications: Candidates must maintain residency in the grand division for which they are seeking to hold office, and be under age 36 or practicing five years or less at the time they would assume office.

Filing Requirements: Candidates must file a nominating petition with the TBA executive director no later than Feb. 15 of the year in which the election is held. The petition must include the signatures of 25 TBA members in good standing. Standard petition forms are available from the TBA.

Election Procedures: Candidates unopposed for a position are deemed to have been elected at the time of the filing deadline. A contested election within a grand division is put before the young lawyers of that grand division by ballot no later than April 1. All ballots must be returned no later than May 1. If no candidate files for delegate or if a vacancy occurs during the term of office, the YLD Board fills the vacancy.



Young Lawyer Delegate to the American Bar Association House of Delegates

Length of Term: 2 years

Qualifications: Candidates must be under age 35 at the time they would assume office.

Filing Requirements: Candidates must file a nominating petition with the TBA executive director no later than Feb. 15 of the year in which the election is held. The petition must include the signatures of 25 TBA members in good standing. Standard petition forms are available from the TBA.

Election Procedures: Candidates unopposed for a position are deemed to have been elected at the time of the filing deadline. A contested election is put before the members of the TBA by ballot no later than April 1. All ballots must be returned no later than May 1. If no candidate files for delegate or if a vacancy occurs during the term of office, the TBA Board of Governors fills the vacancy.
