Brace yourself; legislative activity is about to ramp up
With committee appointments and leadership maneuvering now behind them, members of the state’s 104th General Assembly will begin the complicated business of passing legislation this coming week. Brace yourself.

First off on Monday, Gov. Phil Bredesen will unveil full details of his proposed state budget during the State of the State address. The governor has already said he’ll boost spending on education, but observers are anxious what other priorities he’ll outline in the speech.

Legislators will also be making their priorities known. Expect a flood of bills to be filed during the first few days of the week. More than 1,000 of them would likely have some affect on the practice of law. (See below for information on how to keep up with the legislation using the TBA’s Bill Tracking Service.)

Also next week, legislative committees will swing into action to begin tackling this mountain of bills. Those sessions start on Tuesday.

Looking ahead
Mark your calendars now for the TBA's annual reception for members of the General Assembly. The popular Big Shrimp event is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 15, at the Tennessee Bar Center in Nashville. TBA members can use the event as a chance to meet with state leaders in a relaxed atmosphere.

Keep up to date on legislation of interest
The TBA bill tracking service lets you read abstracts of bills, check their status in both houses, find out who is sponsoring them and link to full versions of the legislation.

TBA Watch List Monitor close to 300 bills and resolutions of interest to the Tennessee legal community.

TBA Action List Monitor legislation in which the TBA has an interest of record — bills the TBA initiated, bills on which the TBA has taken a position or bills on which the TBA has policy.
